How to Read Betting Odds
A price tells you the return on a winning bet. It does not tell you what will happen in the match.
Start with the return
At decimal odds of 2.50, a winning 10-unit stake returns 25 units in total. That includes the original 10 units, so the profit is 15 units.
- Total return = stake × decimal odds.
- Profit = total return − stake.
- If the bet loses, the 10-unit stake is lost.
These examples assume a settled win or loss with no deductions. A void or partially settled bet may be treated differently under the market’s rules.
Use the accumulator calculator to separate the stake, total return and profit for several selections.
Turn the price into a percentage
Divide 100 by the decimal odds. For a price of 2.50:
100 ÷ 2.50 = 40% implied probability.
That is the probability implied by this price, not a measured chance of the team winning. Your own estimate can be wrong, and a short price can still lose.

Check the complete market
For a two-outcome market priced at 1.91 on each side, the implied probabilities are about 52.36% each. Together they total approximately 104.71%.
The excess above 100%, about 4.71 percentage points, is called the overround. It describes the prices across that market; it is not a guaranteed profit for the bookmaker or the exact amount a bettor will lose.
Include every mutually exclusive outcome in the same market. A football match-result market normally requires the home win, draw and away win. Comparing an incomplete set gives a misleading number.
Check a two-way or three-way market with the margin calculator.
Compare the selection, too
A lower overall overround does not mean every selection has a better price. Compare the odds for the exact outcome you are considering, along with the market’s settlement rules.
Understanding a price helps you read an offer. It does not make a bet safe or guarantee an advantage. Keep a fixed budget, and remember that choosing not to bet is always an option.
